Patrick Joseph Hughes served in the British Consular service in China from 1854-1891, when he retired on account of ill-health. He died in Nice, France, on 3 March 1903, aged 69. His brother Thomas Francis Hughes, whose photograph albums are on this site, served in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. Provenance: Purchased from Lucy Drew, 1949.
