Historical Photographs of China album reference: Hv37. Edward Bangs Drew family album of photographs of China. General note: Title from album caption. Provenance: Purchased from Lucy Drew, 1949. Access to original photographs and albums in the Edward Bangs Drew Collection is restricted. Photographs and images from the collection may be reproduced only with written permission. Contact the Harvard-Yenching Library for permissions and fees. Back row, left to right: Walter Caine Hillier (British), Anna Davis Drew (American). Middle row, left to right: Frank James Smith (British), Mrs Lydie Hillier (British), Mary Cooper (British), Émile-Laurent Lépissier (French). Front row, left to right: Edward Bangs Drew (Imperial Maritime Customs Service Commissioner in Ningpo, American), C. Le Bas Rickman (British). Walter Hillier married Lydie Alston Hole on 18 October 1877 and she died in childbirth on 3 December 1878. ‘Mrs Hillier’ in Hv37-19 is Lydie, so this photograph would probably have been taken between 1877 and 1878. See Hv37-56.
