Arriving in Shanghai in 1853, he started Hanbury & Co., merchants in tea and silk. Hanbury diversified into currency trading and cotton broking, to become extremely wealthy and the largest property holder in Shanghai. He built the Giardini Botanici Hanbury at Mortala, Italy.
